The City of Newark Police are one of THE MOST IMPORTANT components to the functioning of our city and maintaining the quality of life for all residents. Contrary to what is being reported I do respect and appreciate all who serve in the capacity of protecting us at the risk of their own lives. My engagement with the Newark Police was the catalyst to my running for office. It inspired me to dig deeper into how the City is managed, the issues from the perspective of all residents and how I can help improve the City as a whole. My focus with the City of Newark Police Includes the following:
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT and RESPECT – Due to recent negative situations involving police on a national level AND those who have had negative experiences with local police, I believe the need for positive open communication outlets for residents, students and business owners to engage with The Newark Police is necessary. Increasing awareness not only from the residents and students sides but also from the Police perspective is invaluable. As Mayor, I would work closely with our Police force to find solutions that work for them and the residents of our community.
DECREASING NEED FOR UNNECESSARY WORK – Right now it is unfair to the Newark City Police to have to spend a majority of their time policing UD student parties. Parties are the number one complaint for residents who attend the Newark City Council meetings. This responsibility should fall on UD. In addition, we have crimes taking place that are putting residents and students at risk that better use of police time could prevent. As I have shared under RESIDENTS and STUDENTS, having a viable plan to decrease the number of student parties held within the residential communities (by providing other nightlife options) will simultaneously allow our police force to decrease the number of real crimes (rapes, robberies and burglaries, etc) from happening. Ultimately productive use of Police time and effort directly increased the City of Newark’s quality of life for all residents.
